This spell inflicts great amounts of pain on the caster in exchange for gloam. The amount is inherently less than could be in any way recovered via gloam, directly or indirectly - i.e. one cannot utilize a disposable Living Salve combined with Askesis for a net gain, though several mages have historically tried and claimed to get increasingly close.. right up until their agonizing expiration. The pain caused by Askesis is notoriously long lasting with aches and bruises that linger for weeks.
