Nothing necessities an item be shaped like a wand, or any particular shape, in order to direct and manipulate gloam. However the shape of a wand, a long object pointed at the target, inherently suggests the nature of targeting and directing, thus aiding in the spell's casting due to this context. Mages can also use staves, weapons, or just about anything else that can have a cartridge attached to cast spells - some especially powerful mages are said to not even require a wand of any sort, though foregoing such would require a much greater skill, and risk, in casting.
